From Seaweed to Safety Leadership, Reflections, Reconnections, and Real Talk
Welcome
This Monday, I returned from a family holiday in St Barts feeling fully recharged. But even while relaxing, my entrepreneurial brain was ticking.
The beaches were full of sargassum seaweed, creating a real issue for tourists and potentially even posing health risks if left untreated. As I looked around, I noticed a local power station with the EDF logo, one of EqualEngineers' current clients. That’s when the dots started to connect.
I later discovered that a UK university (which we've partnered with before) has studied this seaweed challenge. The question popped into my mind: could there be a business solution here, linking the dots between my clients, academia, and this environmental issue?
Something’s brewing…

Curiosity, Courage & Culture
In this powerful episode, I sit down with Karen Aitchison, Global Head of Wellbeing and Partner at ERM. Karen brings heart, humour and honesty to the workplace conversation.
From tackling imposter syndrome to rethinking how curiosity can drive stronger human connections, she shares deeply personal insights and practical tools for creating cultures where people feel safe to show up as themselves.
We explore:
How understanding the brain can shift leadership from reactive to reflective
Why wellbeing is a vital governance issue, not a luxury
How engineers can apply curiosity not just to problems, but to people
Whether you're navigating fear-based decision making or striving to lead with authenticity, this is one of our most reflective episodes yet.
Ask Me Anything: Rescheduled!

Originally, I had planned to host our Ask Me Anything event today. But I’m swapping my speaker’s hat for my dad hat, it’s my children’s end-of-term prize ceremony, and I wouldn’t miss it for the world.
📅 New date: Wednesday 2nd July at 2 PM UK time
This Pride Month special is an open, safe space to ask anything, about identity, leadership, inclusion, mental health, or just life. Whether you’re LGBTQ+, an ally, or simply curious, you’re welcome.
Upcoming IEEE Webinar

Later this month, I’ll be a guest speaker for the IEEE Construction Industry Webinar on 23rd July.
The session will dive into the mental health crisis in engineering and construction, where two workers die by suicide every day in the U.S., and how we can shift from compliance to culture using The SAFE Leader framework.
We’ll unpack how to:
Create psychologically safe environments
Support mental resilience in men
Redefine leadership for today’s engineering challenges
Trish Kerin’s Challenge

This week’s article from the Safety on the Edge conference series spotlights Trish Kerin, Director of LeadLikeKerin.
In her talk, Trish asked a hard-hitting question: What if we stopped confusing process safety with occupational safety? I share my reflections on this, drawing parallels between leadership, systems thinking, and the language of safety.
