The Importance of Networking in Building Trust and Safety Within Teams
How Inclusive Connections Drive Collaboration, Innovation, and Belonging in the Workplace
The Power of Networking
In today’s rapidly evolving work environment, the significance of networking cannot be overstated. Effective networking fosters trust and safety within teams, enhancing collaboration, innovation, and overall productivity. As leaders, it is imperative to cultivate an atmosphere where networking is not just encouraged but ingrained in the organisational culture.
The EqualEngineers Networks Conference: A Beacon of Inclusivity
On Friday, 14th June 2024 in London, the EqualEngineers Networks Conference brought together professionals from across the engineering sector to champion inclusivity and collaboration. This landmark event united EqualEngineers' cross-sector networks, including InterEngineering (LGBTQ+), Menopause, Race, Ethnicity and Cultural Heritage (REACH), Neurodiversity, Disability, Women’s, and Men’s networks.
Supported by Rolls-Royce SMR and the Engineering Council, the conference welcomed 150 attendees who engaged in thought-provoking discussions, shared best practices, and tackled challenges to foster inclusive and safe work environments in engineering. The day highlighted the vital role of networks in driving meaningful change across the sector.
The Lasting Benefits of Cross-Sector Networks
Joining an EqualEngineers Network offers long-lasting benefits that transcend your current employer. This is one of the key advantages of being part of a cross-sector network. Reflecting on my own experience, I co-founded InterEngineering in 2013. This initiative allowed me to grow and nurture a supportive community that has flourished over the years, independent of my employer at any given time.
Supporting Network Leads and Building Communities
Cross-sector networks play a crucial role in supporting internal network leads by fostering community connections between organisations. The original tagline of "connect, inform, and empower" remains at the heart of these networks. Bringing people together, sharing good practices through interactive workshops, and producing thought-leadership pieces available as open-source resources are integral components of our mission. The empowerment aspect is particularly vital, enabling individuals to become change-makers within their organisations, especially those from minoritised communities who often bear the brunt of driving cultural shifts.
Addressing the Burden of Championing Change
However, the responsibility of championing change can be daunting and may vary based on organisational support. Recognising this, I see the necessity for a more intentional approach in supporting each group within engineering. EqualEngineers is committed to alleviating the burden of running a cross-sector network by offering robust support from our central team. This includes managing the technical aspects of event organisation, creating webpages, setting up digital infrastructure, sourcing speakers, and maintaining communications and social media.
Transforming the Engineering Culture
By implementing this model under the EqualEngineers umbrella, we aim to enhance the culture within the engineering sector. This approach not only strengthens individual networks but also enables cross-linking of learnings directly with engineering employers, universities, and institutions.
