Rediscovering the Power of Face-to-Face Leadership

The Unexpected Power of Being Physically Present

When I boarded the plane back to the UK after a year in New York City, I knew I was coming home to a full calendar. What I didn’t expect was how quickly being physically present would spark deeper, richer conversations than I’d had in the previous twelve months combined.

In just four weeks, I’ve sat across from clients over coffee, joined workshops where I could see lightbulbs go on in real time, and bumped into old colleagues at events. Those moments have turned into opportunities I might never have uncovered on a video call.

It’s been a powerful reminder that being there still matters.

In a world where hybrid working and remote meetings are the norm, it’s tempting to think we can do everything through screens. But for leaders, particularly those in engineering and safety-critical sectors, the value of showing up in person goes far beyond efficiency. Here’s why.

Face-to-Face Builds Trust Faster

Trust isn’t built in PowerPoint slides; it’s built in moments. The few minutes of informal chat before a meeting, the shared laugh over a missed train, even the subtle body language we can’t read on video all help to create the conditions for openness.

One of the most heartening things since being back has been the messages that land in my inbox from people who feel moved to reach out. I recently received a note from a former contact I first met years ago through IChemE:

I just saw one of your posts on LinkedIn about making hearing feedback easier and it made me reflect. I’ve also seen other posts you’ve shared with a strong emphasis on compassion and creating a safe environment where people feel comfortable to contribute. I think this approach really helps build relationships based on trust, which is essential for developing a successful team. We’ve been running leadership training on site, and I kept thinking a slightly different perspective might be beneficial. Could we have a quick chat to see if it would be possible to have you come in and tell us more about the SAFE Leader approach?

This message is exactly why I do what I do. It tells me that the work of building psychologically safe cultures is resonating, and that when we connect as humans first, it opens doors for conversations that can shape the culture of entire teams.

Presence Unlocks Deeper Listening

Remote calls are efficient, but they often default to transactional exchanges. In-person settings allow for what I call whole-body listening — noticing not just the words, but the tone, the pauses, and the emotions under the surface.

When I run SAFE Leader sessions, I see how powerful it is when participants feel truly heard. They lean forward, they ask more questions, and they start to reflect on their own behaviour. Those moments of shared vulnerability can be transformative, and they happen more readily when people are in the same room.

Serendipity Sparks Opportunity

Some of the most valuable opportunities aren’t on the agenda. They happen in the corridor after the session ends or during a conversation that runs over by ten minutes. Being physically present creates the space for these moments of serendipity, which can accelerate trust and collaboration in ways that scheduled calls rarely do.

It Re-Energises You as a Leader

Showing up isn’t just for others, it’s for you too. I’ve come away from every recent in-person meeting more energised and more connected to my purpose. It has reminded me that leadership isn’t just about delivering content or hitting milestones; it’s about creating an environment where others can thrive.

Bringing This Back to SAFE Leadership

This message from my network made me reflect on why the SAFE Leader approach works. It’s not a one-off lecture or a box-ticking exercise. It’s a process of Share, Act, Feel, Empower that helps leaders step into discomfort, practice vulnerability, and build the habits needed for safer, more inclusive leadership.

And that works best when we do it together, in person.
