Launching "The SAFE Leader"
A New Blueprint for Inclusive Engineering Leadership
I am thrilled to announce the launch of my new book, The SAFE Leader. This book is a culmination of years of experience, research, and dedication to transforming the engineering industry through the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). As the founder of EqualEngineers, my mission has always been to engineer inclusive cultures that attract, develop, and retain top talent. The SAFE Leader is a significant step in that journey.
The Engineering Industry’s Challenge
The engineering industry is the backbone of our modern world, influencing technology, manufacturing, construction, oil and gas, shipping, healthcare, renewable energy, and more. Despite its pivotal role, the industry faces a critical shortage of skilled workers. Compounding this issue is an ongoing mental health crisis, with high rates of suicide and a culture steeped in stereotypical masculine norms. This creates an unsafe and non-inclusive workplace environment.
Our world is becoming increasingly globalised, and the engineering sector must evolve to meet contemporary challenges. The SAFE Leader addresses these pressing issues by providing a comprehensive framework for embedding DEI principles into the core of engineering practices.
A New Approach to Leadership
In The SAFE Leader, I delve into how DEI practices can bridge the skills gap and foster a workplace that is both physically and psychologically safe. The book outlines how inclusive leadership not only benefits individual well-being but also drives innovation and inclusive design.
Key insights include:
The importance of equity in male-dominated fields such as engineering and technology.
The critical connection between DEI and health and safety.
Practical steps to lead cultural change within organisations.
Why DEI Matters for Engineering
Successful DEI implementation hinges on strong leadership and thorough training. The SAFE Leader provides a robust strategy for leaders to adopt, ensuring that their teams are inclusive and diverse. This approach leads to:
Improved team dynamics
Enhanced financial performance
Increased productivity
Safer, more inclusive workplaces
As organisations strive to stay competitive and innovative, embracing DEI is not just beneficial but essential. The book demonstrates that a commitment to DEI is a commitment to better business outcomes and a more engaged, motivated workforce.
Watch the Recorded Webinar
Earlier this year, I had the incredible opportunity to celebrate the launch of The SAFE Leader with a special webinar featuring some esteemed colleagues and friends. It was an unforgettable session that brought together leaders in DEI and communication to share their perspectives and advice.
I was joined by Jenn T. Grace, a Certified B Corp and my publisher from Publish Your Purpose; Eduardo Placer, my extraordinary public speaking coach from Fearless Communicators; and Jennifer Brown from Jennifer Brown Consulting, who has been a pivotal influence in my journey and hosts one of my favourite podcasts, The Will to Change.
What We Covered
The webinar delved deep into the book’s themes and offered practical advice for implementing DEI strategies in organisations. It was an enriching discussion with plenty of actionable insights and even some lighthearted moments.
If you missed the live session, don’t worry—you can still watch the recording and gain valuable inspiration and guidance for creating safer, more inclusive workplaces.
Watch the Webinar
Whether you’re a leader in engineering, a DEI advocate, or someone committed to transforming workplace culture, this webinar provides a wealth of knowledge to guide your journey toward becoming a SAFE Leader.
Together, let’s continue to lead the change that the engineering industry so urgently needs.
