Holding the Light Through the Storm

Why Inclusive Leadership Matters Now More Than Ever

With the recent political developments in the United States, the world braces for another potential shift in political dynamics. It’s a moment that brings strong headwinds, testing our resilience and determination to preserve the progress we've made in diversity, equity, and inclusion. As with any pendulum swing, progress is not always linear—it moves forward, then back. This is one of those times that reminds us just how much ongoing reinforcement our efforts require.

Back in November 2024, I visited the Statue of Liberty. That day, a solar eclipse passed overhead, and I captured a photo of Lady Liberty with her torch raised high against the darkened sky. It struck me then, and still does now, as a powerful symbol of hope—an enduring reminder of the light we must hold onto, even when the path ahead feels uncertain.

America has long been seen as a beacon of liberty, founded on values of freedom, equality, and opportunity. In moments of upheaval, it’s even more vital that we return to those foundational ideals and recommit ourselves to them.

One of the biggest challenges we face today is ensuring that our institutions, particularly businesses, remain steadfast pillars of connection, empathy, and inclusion. Now more than ever, we need strong scaffolding to support the ongoing work of creating safe, inclusive environments where everyone can thrive, free from harm or discrimination.

In engineering, we understand this deeply. Our field is grounded in solving complex problems and building frameworks that benefit society. But to build a future that works for everyone, we need individuals who bring not only technical skill, but empathy too. That’s becoming harder to sustain when political and cultural climates become more divisive.

A line from A Scots Quair, a book I studied in school, often comes back to me: “Nothing endures; all that is guaranteed as a constant is change.” That reflection has served as a reminder to me over the years, what feels overwhelming in the moment often gains perspective with time. And what seems like a step back may, in the long arc of progress, be a catalyst for renewed commitment.

These shifts we’re witnessing may embolden some to push back harder against DEI efforts. That’s precisely why this work is so vital. At its core, DEI is about safety, not just physical safety, but psychological safety, too. It’s about creating environments where people feel seen, respected, and supported.

As we navigate the turbulence ahead, we must stay anchored in empathy, resilience, and compassion. Change is inevitable, but our response to it is within our control. Together, we can continue building safer, stronger workplaces where every individual, regardless of their background, feels valued and secure.
