The Conversations Shaping Engineering

Welcome

Two weeks ago we hosted the first EqualEngineers Student Summit in partnership with UCL in Birmingham. Last week, we were at Culham Campus in Oxford delivering The SAFE Leader training for UK Fusion Energy.

It’s been great to see such strong engagement across both events, from students exploring the future of engineering, to professionals reflecting on leadership, culture and psychological safety in practice.

More on the UKFE training below.

The SAFE Leader at UK Fusion Energy

Last week we delivered The SAFE Leader training at Culham Campus for UK Fusion Energy.

It was a fantastic group of attendees, with discussions running throughout the day and a real openness to engage with the themes behind the framework. A huge thank you to Michael Lord for helping make the session happen.

One of the strongest aspects of the training was the storytelling and reflection from the learners themselves. Those conversations helped people get to know each other better, created space for honest discussion, and brought the SAFE principles to life in a very practical way.

There were plenty of learnings throughout the session, but importantly the group also came together to agree clear actions they wanted to take forward beyond the training itself.

It was also a great example of how The SAFE Leader can be successfully delivered in a one-day format for organisations looking for a focused and impactful experience.

Are Engineering Careers Fairs Still Valuable?

This week we launched a LinkedIn poll around a question we’ve been debating internally at EqualEngineers:

Should engineering careers fairs make a comeback?

We previously ran large-scale engineering careers fairs and community events across the UK, creating opportunities for students, graduates, employers and educators to connect in person.

Since stepping away from those events in 2023, we’ve been reflecting on how engagement is changing.

Have digital platforms permanently shifted expectations?
Do employers and students want something different now?
Or does in-person connection still matter more than ever?

I’d love to hear your thoughts as well.

What’s your view on engineering careers fairs today?

Accessibility in Engineering Event

Next week we’ll be hosting another event as part of our growing partnerships with Professional Engineering Institutions, this time with the Institute of Materials, Minerals & Mining (IOM3).

📅 Wednesday 13 May
🕛 12:00pm

Accessibility in Engineering with IOM3 will explore how accessibility can be strengthened across the engineering profession, bringing together guest speakers from across the sector to share insights and experiences around removing barriers, supporting disabled engineers, and creating more inclusive workplaces and learning environments.

Alongside the panel discussion, there will also be audience Q&A and practical discussion around what organisations and individuals can do to help make engineering more accessible for everyone.

This Week on The SAFE Leader Podcast

This week I sat down with Robert Mahoney, founder and CEO of TVTP Solutions, for a fascinating conversation about what it really takes to build safer organisations and communities.

Drawing on his background across emergency management, federal agencies and prevention work, Robert explores why safety cannot rely on reaction alone, and why relationships, coordination and trust are essential when designing effective systems.

Together, we discuss the shift from protection and response towards prevention-led thinking, and how leaders can move upstream before problems escalate. From breaking down silos to understanding human behaviour, this episode challenges us to rethink what safety means and how leaders can create systems that are more connected, proactive and rooted in care.
