Leadership, Safety Culture, And The Stories Shaping Engineering
Welcome
My TEDx talk is finally live!
Late last year I had the opportunity to speak at TEDxViikki in Helsinki, exploring an idea that sits at the very heart of my work through The SAFE Leader.
Most engineers are trained to solve problems. But very few of us are trained to talk about ourselves, our fears, our identity, and the experiences that shaped us. Yet those stories influence how we lead, how we design systems, and ultimately how safe our workplaces really are.
In the talk, I explore why safety culture is deeply connected to human stories, how silence within engineering can create hidden risks, and why leaders must make it SAFE to speak if we want stronger, more resilient organisations.
International Women’s Day Event

Next Monday, we’re hosting a special EqualEngineers webinar for International Women’s Day, centred around this year’s theme. Our guest speaker will be Sarah Hunter, and together we’ll explore what this theme means for women working across engineering and technology.
The session will reflect on how sharing experiences, whether small moments, honest lessons, or personal stories, can help create more inclusive workplaces and inspire others entering the sector. Alongside Sarah’s insights, we’ll also run interactive audience activities designed to spark reflection and conversation.
During the event we’ll also introduce an exciting new initiative inviting women engineers to contribute to a series of role model case studies, which will launch later this year on International Women in Engineering Day (INWED).
The SAFE Leader Workshop

This week I ran the first of two interactive SAFE Leader workshops for March, and it was fantastic to see such strong engagement from participants.
Attendees had the opportunity to explore the framework in practice, using the SAFE Leader scorecard to reflect on how safe their organisations really feel across the four pillars.
If you weren’t able to join the first session, there’s still one more opportunity this month.
Next workshop: 17 March | 12pm
The session introduces the SAFE Leader Framework and explores how leaders can build cultures of trust, inclusion and psychological safety within their organisations.
This Week on The SAFE Leader Podcast
This week’s episode features Russell Van Brocklen, dyslexia researcher, educator and keynote speaker, whose life took an unexpected turn after failing at university because of his dyslexia.
Russell shares the personal story that drove him to challenge traditional education models and explains how his research led to a radically different approach to teaching reading and writing, one that has helped students jump multiple grade levels in just months.
Our conversation explores the science behind dyslexia, why many conventional teaching methods fail neurodivergent learners, and how focusing on a person’s strengths can unlock extraordinary results. We also discuss what this means beyond the classroom, including how organisations can harness neurodiverse talent and why dyslexic thinkers may be uniquely suited to solve complex problems in an AI-driven world.

I love helping organisations where the angle I take with the work I do might help in someway have you make traction in your culture.
