Building Safer, More Inclusive Engineering

Welcome

One of the things I’ve been especially proud of this year has been the launch of the Engineering Talent Podcast, and this week we’ve already reached Episode 6. It’s also been fantastic to see my brilliant colleague Fayon Dixon expand her focus from hosting our flagship Engineering Talent Awards to now leading these podcast conversations with real warmth and curiosity.

In the latest episode, Fayon sits down with Jakub Zemek, a PhD researcher, pilot in training and Engineering Talent Awards nominee whose journey is driven by a dream that has never quite left him. Jakub wanted to be an astronaut at six years old, and that same curiosity and ambition still shapes his path today. From building Lego in the Czech Republic to navigating the realities of AI-filtered job rejections, his story captures both the optimism and uncertainty many emerging engineers face.

Professional Engineering Institution (PEI) Partnerships

In recent weeks, EqualEngineers has been steadily formalising partnerships with a growing group of Professional Engineering Institutions, including IGEM, InstMC, IOM3 and BINDT, with further announcements still to come.

Press Releases

What we’re seeing is a genuine alignment across parts of the profession around a shared challenge: how we build engineering environments that are not only technically robust, but culturally strong, inclusive and psychologically safe.

Across these partnerships, the focus is consistent, strengthening inclusive professional development, supporting under-represented talent to enter and progress, and creating practical learning opportunities that help engineers and organisations translate good intent into everyday practice.

Joint Webinar with InstMC

One of the first visible steps in this growing collaboration will take place on 18 March, when EqualEngineers and the Institute of Measurement and Control (InstMC) will host:

This will be a practical, industry-focused session exploring how safety is shaped not just by systems and processes, but by everyday behaviours, leadership choices and team culture.

OEUK HSE Conference

Next week I’ll be in Aberdeen for the OEUK HSE Conference 2026 and it’s shaping up to be an important moment for the offshore energy community. The conference theme, Trust. Transparency. Transformation. could not be more timely.

Across the offshore and wider energy sectors, organisations are navigating:

  • Increasing operational complexity

  • The realities of the energy transition

  • Heightened scrutiny on safety and culture

  • And a growing recognition that trust is now a critical safety asset

I’m honoured to be delivering the closing keynote: A new tide of trust: Inspiring safer and stronger offshore cultures

With 35+ speakers, 20+ exhibitors and multiple parallel sessions across the day, OEUK is bringing together a powerful cross-section of the industry. If you’re attending in Aberdeen, do come and say hello — it would be great to connect in person.

This Week on The SAFE Leader Podcast

This week’s episode is a powerful one.

I sat down with Ben West, one of the UK’s leading mental health campaigners, for a conversation that goes far beyond awareness and into real systems change.

After losing his younger brother Sam to suicide at just 15, Ben channelled his grief into action, challenging education, healthcare and policy systems to do better.

In this episode we explore:

  • Why awareness alone is not enough

  • The foundations that actually prevent crisis

  • How meaningful change happens inside government and the NHS

  • The “boring” system improvements that ultimately save lives

It’s honest. Thoughtful. And deeply important.
