Preparing for Boston, and Sharing the SAFE Way to Lead

Welcome

It’s half term and I’ve swapped keynote stages for cobbled streets and sunshine. Right now, I’m in Rome with my family and we’ve clearly found the city’s top sun worshippers… the lemurs! Honestly, they’ve nailed the “basking in the sunshine” pose better than anyone.

These little moments matter. I’m grateful for this time to reset and recharge before heading into a busy November. For now, it’s all about sunshine, silliness, and soaking it all in.

My AIChE Interview

Ahead of next week’s sessions at the AIChE Annual Meeting in Boston, I had the chance to speak with their editorial team. In our interview, we talk about why safety leadership is evolving and how the SAFE framework gives engineers a practical roadmap for inclusive culture change.

Here’s a quote from the piece:

“The SAFE Leader workshop is designed to help participants rethink what safety means. Not just as a checklist, but as a way of being, as a leader, a colleague, and a culture shaper.”

Dr Mark McBride-Wright

We explore how storytelling can be used to unlock emotional intelligence in engineering environments and why this work is especially urgent in high-risk industries.

Leadership with Integrity with Paul Bailey

This week’s guest on The SAFE Leader Podcast is Paul Bailey, CEO of the Engineering Council. We dive into what it really means to lead with integrity, from early career moments that shaped his leadership style to the importance of ethics, trust, and authenticity in engineering.

Paul reflects on the evolving responsibilities of engineers today, not just as technical experts, but as champions of sustainable, inclusive practice. If you’re navigating leadership in the post-Covid world, this one is rich with perspective.
