CPD Certified Course, Insights From Lorraine Martin and How Leadership Shapes Safer Workplaces

Welcome

The SAFE Leader training course is now officially CPD Certified!

This is a proud moment for all of us at EqualEngineers. When I first began shaping the framework, it was grounded in a belief that psychological safety deserves just as much structure and rigour as physical safety. To now see that work formally recognised, and count towards CPD hours for professional registration, whether you’re working toward Chartered, Incorporated, or Engineering Technician status, is incredibly rewarding.

We’ve poured a lot into making this course practical, inclusive, and deeply human, and I’m thrilled it’s being picked up across the UK. This autumn, we’ll be running in-person training sessions in Glasgow, Manchester, London, Aberdeen, Bristol, Birmingham, and Belfast.

If you've been waiting to take the course (or know someone who should), now’s a great time.

New on The SAFE Leader Podcast

This week, I sat down with Linda Carlisle, a strategic advisor with 30+ years’ experience guiding companies through change, mergers, and cultural transformation.

We unpacked:

  • How internal culture shapes external brand

  • Why psychological safety is fuelled by communication

  • What leaders often miss during moments that matter

  • And how empathy, listening, and clarity transform trust

Linda’s insights are both timely and timeless, perfect for anyone navigating organisational complexity or leading teams through change.

The Ripple Effect of Unsafe Work

This week’s article in the Safety on the Edge series draws on insights from Lorraine Martin, President and CEO of the National Safety Council (NSC), who delivered a powerful keynote on how leadership sets the tone for psychological and physical safety alike.

In it, I reflect on the ripple effects created by unsafe cultures, the long-lasting impact when people don’t feel seen, heard, or valued in their workplace. Lorraine reminded us that safety is not just compliance, it’s connection. And it starts with leaders being willing to ask hard questions, model vulnerability, and listen without defensiveness.

The article explores how safety, inclusion, and wellbeing are interconnected, and how we can move from checking boxes to building cultures that genuinely care. It’s a call to reframe safety not as a destination, but as a practice of empathy, accountability, and leadership.
