RIA at 150, IEEE Webinar Ahead and What Leaders Miss When Safety Gets Too Quiet
Welcome
Yesterday evening, I had the pleasure of attending the 150th anniversary celebration of the Railway Industry Association (RIA) at The Garden in Vauxhall. It was a brilliant evening, bringing together over 600 guests from across the rail supply community to honour the legacy and future of the UK railway industry.
The event marked not only a major milestone for RIA, but also a moment to reflect on how far the industry has come, from steam to digital. There were inspiring speeches from leaders including Darren Caplan, Angie Doll, Andy Lord, and Justin Moss, and the launch of RIA’s commemorative book Steam to Digital added a powerful historical lens to the evening.
It was fantastic to connect with so many passionate individuals across the sector and be part of a celebration that recognises both heritage and innovation in equal measure.

Rethinking Safety with IEEE

Engineering and construction are at a tipping point.
On 23 July 2025, I’ll be speaking live with IEEE-USA to share how The SAFE Leader framework, Share | Act | Feel | Empower, can help leaders create psychologically safe workplaces across high-risk sectors.
We’ll explore how to:
Normalise mental-health conversations on site and in the office
Break the stigma that prevents men (and others) from seeking help
Lead more inclusive, resilient teams that retain talent and drive innovation
This webinar is about going beyond compliance, towards cultures of care, openness, and true safety.
Register now to be part of this essential conversation.
Dr Frank L. Douglas on Reframing Adversity
In this episode, I’m joined by Dr Frank L. Douglas, a trailblazing physician, scientist, and author, who takes us on a journey from his early life in Guyana to the upper echelons of the pharmaceutical and biotech industries.
He shares the discrimination he faced, the mindset shifts that helped him rise above it, and his reframing methodology that turns obstacles into opportunities. We discuss his Equity, Inclusion and Individual Engagement model, and his views on the current state of DEI in business and society.
This is a powerful conversation about identity, courage, and legacy, and what it truly means to lead with purpose when progress feels fragile.

In my latest article from the Safety on the Edge series, I reflect on a keynote delivered by Kathleen Sutcliffe, whose work on organisational resilience and high-reliability systems challenges us to see the invisible. She reminds us that some of the greatest risks in our workplaces aren’t the ones we track, but the ones we overlook.
Too often in safety culture, we focus on what’s visible and measurable, incident reports, audit scores, compliance checklists, while missing the subtler, human signals of harm: burnout, silence, and disconnection.
The article explores how leaders can expand their awareness to include the emotional and relational dynamics that shape behaviour long before something goes wrong. What stories are going unheard? What discomfort is being avoided? And what would it take to truly listen before action is forced?
If you care about building resilient teams, not just safe ones, this one’s for you.
