The Hummingbird Effect, Reframing Safety Language, and Birmingham Pride

Welcome

Last week, I travelled to Connecticut for a training that blended safety with communication, introducing us to the Applied Improvisation Network (AIN). It reawakened a part of me that once dreamt of doing drama as a kid, and reminded me just how powerful improv techniques can be in leadership and safety.

One standout moment was the classic “Yes, and...” exercise, which encouraged openness, trust, and being fully present, qualities we don’t often practise enough in technical environments.

Applied improvisation is more than performance, it’s about connection, adaptability, and listening deeply. And that’s something every leader and engineer can benefit from.

Malcolm Staves and the Hummingbird Effect

This week on The SAFE Leader Podcast, I sit down with Malcolm Staves, Global Vice President of Health and Safety at L’Oréal, to talk about leading with purpose, conviction, and care. Malcolm introduces us to the story of the hummingbird, a small creature with a big impact, which has come to symbolise his entire approach to leadership.

From global systems change to grassroots efforts in schools and communities, Malcolm shows how small, consistent actions can lead to transformational outcomes. We dive into themes of mental wellbeing, prevention before crisis, and breaking the silence around issues like suicide and stress.

This is an emotional and practical conversation that will leave you reflecting on how you show up as a leader, and how you can make a difference, even in small ways.

The Hidden Language of Safety

This week on Beehiiv, I shared a new article based on a talk I attended by James Pomeroy. The piece is titled “The Hidden Language of Safety”, and it explores how much of our safety communication is implicit, unspoken, and deeply cultural, and how that shapes the way people behave.

Too often, safety is reduced to signage, procedures, or reporting systems. But what if the real message lives in what’s not said? In how we make people feel? In the tone, the language, the environment, and the leadership culture that surrounds safety conversations?

In the article, I reflect on how we can reframe our approach to safety language, from rules to relationships, from compliance to conversation.
