One Year of The SAFE Leader, Internal Team Development, and a New Chapter for Men and Boys

Welcome

Last weekend, I visited the New York Science Museum with my kids, and unexpectedly reconnected with my inner child. It was refreshing to be immersed in creativity, discovery, and play.

What really stayed with me was how many adults were there without kids, completely engaged and having fun. It reminded me that play is not just for children, it’s something we all need, but rarely prioritise. If I didn’t have children, I’d need to intentionally create space for fun and exploration.

Joy and curiosity aren’t luxuries, they’re vital. And making time for them, even as adults, is part of resilient, reflective leadership.

Celebrating my Bookversary

Yesterday marked one year since the launch of The SAFE Leader, a milestone that has meant more to me than I could have imagined. In just 12 months, the book has not only sparked conversations but also become the foundation of EqualEngineers’ signature training programme.

It’s opened the door to new speaking engagements, introduced me to brilliant people across the industry, and deepened my focus on the link between safety, inclusion, and leadership.

If you’ve read the book and found value in it, I’d really appreciate it if you could leave a review. It helps others find it and supports the ongoing work around inclusive leadership and psychological safety.

Antonio Zappulla on Values-Driven Leadership

This week’s episode of The SAFE Leader Podcast features a powerful conversation with Antonio Zappulla, CEO of the Thomson Reuters Foundation. From his start in a newsroom during 9/11 to steering a global organisation through the pandemic, Antonio shares what it means to lead with clarity and courage in uncertain times.

We explore his LGBTQ+ advocacy, his unwavering defence of human rights, and his belief that every passport should carry equal power. This is a conversation about taking bold action, making values-based decisions, and finding opportunity in crisis.

Whether you're a CEO or a team lead, Antonio’s journey is a model of what purpose-driven leadership looks like in action.

Internal Development at EqualEngineers

This week, I had the pleasure of delivering The SAFE Leader programme internally to the EqualEngineers team. It was a brilliant opportunity for everyone to explore the framework together, Share, Act, Feel, Empower, and reflect not just on professional development, but on personal growth and team dynamics.

Some powerful stories and insights emerged, including moments where colleagues learned things about each other they hadn’t known before. We also received valuable feedback on the programme, which we’ll be using to refine and improve it moving forward.

This was a proud moment for me, not just as a facilitator, but as a founder watching my own team engage deeply with the work.

A New Chapter for Men and Boys

This week, I wrote about the launch of the Centre for Policy Research on Men and Boys, chaired by Richard Reeves, with Mark Brooks OBE as Founding Director. This new initiative seeks to spotlight the specific challenges men and boys face today, from educational attainment to mental health and fatherhood.

As someone who has long worked on issues relating to masculinity, safety, and inclusion, I welcome this centre’s creation. It’s not about pushing anyone aside, it’s about addressing systemic issues that affect everyone, and helping boys and men find healthier, more connected ways of existing in the world.

We need to move past binary thinking and recognise that advancing inclusion for one group doesn’t come at the expense of another. We can support women, non-binary people, and men at the same time.
