The SAFE Leader Open Course Now Available to All and From Accidental Beginnings to Industry Impact

Welcome!

Dear Readers,

It’s half-term here in the US, and I’ve taken a break with my family in Arizona. A visit to Phoenix Zoo turned into an unexpected leadership lesson when I spotted two doves, completely unfazed by the chaos around them. While I was busy chasing after the kids and navigating rogue peacocks, they remained still—calm, collected, and entirely unbothered.

It made me think—maybe we could all use a little more dove energy in life. In leadership, DEI, and safety, we often focus on complex challenges, but sometimes the most important lessons are the simplest: Find your people, support each other, and take a moment to breathe. True leadership isn’t just about constant hustle; it’s about knowing when to pause, reflect, and share the journey.

Have a great day,
Mark

The SAFE Leader Open Course – Now Available to All

Many of you may know me as the author of The SAFE Leader and as the founder of EqualEngineers, where we have been delivering training programmes based on the book. Until now, these courses have been tailored for large organisations, but after hearing from individuals and SMEs who want access, we are launching The SAFE Leader Open Course. This means that anyone—whether an individual professional or a company with a small team—can now benefit from this training.

The course comes in two versions: the standard Open Course, covering all four modules (Share, Act, Feel, Empower), and the Open Course VIP, which includes again, all four modules (Share, Act, Feel, Empower), three coaching sessions with me, plus ongoing support. This is an opportunity to gain practical, actionable leadership skills that embed safety and inclusion at the heart of engineering and beyond.

From Accidental Beginnings to Industry Impact

This week on The SAFE Leader Podcast, I sit down with David Jamieson, founder of Salus Technical, to discuss his journey into process safety engineering and the challenges of launching a business during the pandemic. David shares how Salus integrates psychological safety into technical safety work, bridging the gap between human factors and engineering risk management.

We explore the tools and techniques used at Salus Technical, the growing role of AI in process safety, and the importance of clear communication in risk management. David also provides insightful advice for young professionals entering the field, emphasising the need for continuous learning and adaptability in an ever-evolving industry.

This conversation offers valuable perspectives on the intersection of culture, technology, and safety, making it essential listening for anyone working in safety, risk, or leadership.
