Welcome!
Dear Readers,
Welcome to the third edition of The SAFE Leader Insights. This week has been a significant one on the global stage, with President Donald Trump returning to power and swiftly rescinding DEI provisions through executive orders. These actions have undoubtedly sent shockwaves through the engineering and broader professional community. While I will share more detailed reflections on this in future editions, I remain committed to promoting inclusion and psychological safety as essential pillars of leadership, no matter the challenges.
As always, thank you for being part of this journey. Let’s keep pushing for progress, even in challenging times.
Warm regards,
Mark

The SAFE Leader Podcast Ep. 005
I’m excited to share the latest episode of The SAFE Leader Podcast!

In this episode, I sit down with Emma Henderson, one of fewer than 500 female airline captains worldwide, to explore her remarkable journey from a childhood fascination with flight to a trailblazing career in aviation.
Emma shares incredible stories from her career, including flying celebrities and royalty, and her pivot to founding the global charity Project Wingman, which supported NHS staff during the pandemic. Now an in-demand speaker and author, Emma champions "grounded leadership"—a powerful blend of humanity, humility, and humour that she believes is essential for effective leadership today.
Her story is a testament to resilience, purpose, and the transformative power of following your passions. This episode is a must-listen for anyone seeking inspiration on leadership, overcoming challenges, and making a meaningful impact.
Leading Across Time Zones and Boundaries

Relocating to New York City has been one of the most exciting and challenging transitions of my career. Managing a business remotely with a five-hour time difference while balancing work and family life has pushed me to refine my leadership approach.
In my latest LinkedIn newsletter article, Leading Across Time Zones and Boundaries, I share valuable lessons I’ve learned about leadership during times of change. From mastering time management to empowering teams with autonomy, adaptability, and empathy, these insights are designed to inspire leaders navigating their own challenges.
Highlights include:
Time Management as a Leadership Skill: Prioritise actions that drive impact and use tools like Slack and Trello for efficiency.
Empowering Teams with Autonomy: Set clear expectations and create a culture of problem-solving.
Adapting to Change with Resilience: Anchor yourself with purpose and treat challenges as growth opportunities.
The Power of Empathy: Understand and support the unique challenges of your team members.

The Masculinity Trap

I recently had the honour of being featured in an article by Engineers Without Borders UK alongside Ed McCann, exploring The Masculinity Trap. This article delves into how societal expectations around masculinity shape behaviours, limit inclusivity, and create barriers to diversity in engineering.
As a male leader, I shared my perspective on breaking down stereotypes, fostering openness, and creating a culture where everyone feels safe to be themselves. The insights from this piece align closely with the values of the SAFE Leader framework, particularly in building inclusive environments.
I encourage you to read this insightful article to understand the cultural shifts needed to redefine leadership in engineering.

The Power of Psychological Safety in STEM

Earlier this year, I had the privilege of delivering a lecture for the Institution of Agricultural Engineers titled The Power of Psychological Safety and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in STEM.
In this session, I explored:
The role of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) in addressing the skills gap.
Impactful case studies demonstrating the benefits of DEI.
Practical strategies to enhance team productivity and safety.
This talk highlighted how fostering psychological safety can lead to more innovative, resilient, and effective teams.
